Instant Reaction: Anton Volchenkov signed to one-year deal

Nashville found the veteran defenseman they were looking for on the free agent market, plucking Anton Volchenkov out of the pile to a one-year, $1 million deal

Volchenkov’s been around for a bit, now going into his 12th season in the NHL. Spending seven years with Ottawa and his previous four with New Jersey before being bought out, Volchenkov is the servicable veteran presence on the blue-line that Nashville may have hoped to acquire.

His stats aren’t the greatest, averaging eight points a year over his past three season. Yet, now that players and teams are broken down into much more detailed statistics, we can look at exactly how solid of a signing this is for the Predators.

Volchenkov’s possession statistics are noticeably higher than the majority of Nashville’s current defenseman, with his Corsi For percentage at 55% and Fenwick For percentage at 54.8% for last season alone. Both of the previously mentioned statistics would place Volchenkov at the top of Nashville’s defenseman for last season, in terms of possession, along with playing against some of the tougher on-ice competition every game. He’s been consistent over his career, as well.

Nashville has needed a solid replacement for Kevin Klein. They thought they had it with Michael Del Zotto, however letting the restricted free agent walk and picking up Volchenkov for a minimal $1 million for a one-year deal is a win-win for the Predators. They get the left-handed shot they need to compliment Seth Jones on the second pair and it allows Ellis and Ekholm to gain their own chemistry.
