Nashville Predators Draft Targets – Nikolaj Ehlers

Jun 18, 2014

2013-2014 Team: Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL)

2013-2014 Stats: 63gp, 49g, 55a (104pts)

Scouting Report Synopsis (via Hockey’s Future):

“Blessed with dynamic speed and sniper’s hands, Ehlers did not have to adapt to the QMJHL so much as the league needed to readjust and try to stop the blazing Dane. Able to dance through defenders and fire his laser-precise wrister home, he will only get better as he continues to get stronger and more capable of breaking through physical pressure. Creative with the puck, Ehlers is working hard to round out his game.

Why Nashville WOULD draft Nikolaj Ehlers:

The fourth-leading scorer in the entire QMJHL this past season, Nikolaj Ehlers is a dynamic offensive dynamo ready to be picked in this year’s draft. In only his first season with the Halifax Mooseheads, the Denmark native put up 104 points (49 goals and 55 assists) to lead all rookies in the league. Noted for his playmaking skills and high hockey intelligence, an addition of Ehlers to the roster would give Nashville an explosive winger who is most likely NHL-ready.

Potentially one of the fastest players at the draft this year and, according to Matthew Bontorin of the Nashville Predators, Ehlers has already been compared to the likes of Pavel Bure, Peter Forsberg, and Patrick Kane. Just the thought of being able to land a forward of Kane’s caliber should be enough of an incentive, let alone the caliber of Forsberg and Bure.

Why Nashville WOULD NOT draft Nikolaj Ehlers:

I honestly can’t see a reason why Nashville wouldn’t want to draft a player like Nikolaj Ehlers. Jumping nine spots in the NHL Central Scoutings rankings from 22 to 13 in their final rankings, some are saying that Ehlers could be the most electrifying player available at this years draft. His size is a bit small at 5’11” and 163 pounds, but Patrick Kane was near the same size at the time he was drafted at 5’10” and 162 pounds.

Chance that Nashville drafts Nikolaj Ehlers:

Good. There are plenty of players that are ranked ahead of Ehlers as he currently sits at 13th overall for North American skaters in the NHL Central Scouting’s final rankings. While that’s not to say the Predators will absolutely have a chance to draft Ehlers when it’s their time on the clock, there is a very solid opportunity that he’ll be available for them.
