For those looking at Filip Forsberg to make an immediate impact on Nashville’s lineup, it looks like it may be a little longer before that happens. The Predators just issued this press release regarding Forsberg:

“Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has reassigned forward Filip Forsberg to Milwaukee of the American Hockey League.

Forsberg, 19 (8/13/94), was named Most Valuable Player, Best Forward and a media all-star at the 2014 World Junior Championships (held Dec. 26-Jan. 5), helping the host nation to a silver medal, his third time placing at the tournament (2014: silver, 2013: silver, 2012: gold). The Ostervala, Sweden native has posted five points (1g-4a) in 12 games with Nashville, and eight points (3g-5a) in seven games with the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals in 2013-14.”

When Forsberg’s time ended at the World Junior Championships, we speculated that he would most likely head to Milwaukee to play before stepping on the ice for the Predators again this season. While he did participate in practice yesterday and pregame warmup with the team prior to their game against the Anaheim Ducks, Forsberg will be best served getting acclimated to a higher level of competition before earning time on ice with Nashville. Granted, his performance at the World Junior Championships was stellar and he earned his MVP status, however the skill level in the AHL is stronger than what he’s played against internationally and the skill level in the NHL is stronger than the AHL.

Transitioning directly from playing against junior international competition to NHL-caliber talent is a very difficult transition. Trotz spoke Wednesday about doing what the organization feels is best for Forsberg in bringing him along the right way. In my opinion, I think this is absolutely the right move.

Could the Predators use what Forsberg brings to the table? Absolutely. At this juncture? Not right now. Given time, Forsberg will be exactly what everyone thinks he will become, but it’s all about how Nashville utilizes their development of him that will decide how he turns out.
