History bodes well for Predators that have earned NHL weekly/monthly awards

Around noon on Tuesday, Predators rookie goaltender Marek Mazanec was named the NHL’s Rookie of the Month for the month of November. Mazanec is the second Nashville player to receive the Rookie of the Month honors and it marks the 29th time the NHL has awarded a Predators player with a weekly or monthly nod for stellar play, including Mazanec being the fourth Nashville goaltender to earn such an award.

However, for players that have received the award in Nashville’s lineup, they’ve historically continued to impress immediately after the award is handed out.

For forwards/defensemen who have won the award, every player finished in the top five in team points at the end of the season.

Scott Walker: NHL Offensive Player of the Week for 12/22/03 – 12/29/03, scored seven points (1g, 6a) in his next seven games and finished the season with a team-high 63 points.

Steve Sullivan: NHL Offensive Player of the Week for 2/16/04 – 2/22/04, scored three points (1g, 2a) in his next four games and finished the season with a team-high 73 total points (30 with Nashville, 43 with Chicago).

Steve Sullivan: NHL Offensive Player of the Week for 10/10/05 – 10/16/05, scored six points (4g, 2a) in his next eight games and finished the season second on the team with 68 points.

JP Dumont: NHL’s Second Star of the Month for January 2008, scored 14 points (5g, 9a) in the month of February and finished the season tied with a team-high 72 points.

Shea Weber: NHL’s Third Star of the Month for October 2008, scored 11 points (6g, 5a) in the month of November and finished the season third on the team with 53 points.

David Legwand: NHL’s First Star of the Week for 1/15/07 – 1/21/07, scored three points (0g, 3a) in his next two games and finished the season third on the team with 63 points.

Martin Erat: NHL’s Third Star of the Week for 11/12/07 – 11/18/07, scored seven points (3g, 4a) in his next four games and finished the season fourth on the team with 57 points.

Jason Arnott: NHL’s Third Star of the Week for 12/17/07 – 12/23/07, scored nine points (3g, 6a) in his next ten games and finished the season tied with a team-high 72 points.

Patric Hornqvist: NHL’s Third Star of the Week for 12/14/09 – 12/20/09, scored nine points (7g, 2a) in his next nine games and finished the season tied with a team-high 51 points.

Martin Erat: NHL’s Third Star of the Week for 3/12/12 – 3/18/12, scored a goal and an assist in his final seven games to finish the season with a team high 58 points.

For goaltenders? The immediate results are nearly the same:

(** = Only times a Predators player has performed poorly after receiving a weekly/monthly award)

Tomas Vokoun

Player of the Week: 12/27/99 – 1/2/00, won three of his next five starts.

Defensive Player of the Week: 11/24/03 – 11/30/03, won his next two immediate starts.

Defensive Player of the Week: 11/28/05 – 12/4/05, won four of his next five starts.

Defensive Player of the Week: 3/13/06 – 3/19/06, won his next immediate start.

Chris Mason

Second Star of the Week: 12/11/06 – 12/17/06, won four of his next six starts and recorded two shutouts.

**Third Star of the Week: 10/3/07 – 10/7/07, lost his next seven straight.

Dan Ellis

Second Star of the Week: 3/24/08 – 3/30/08, won his last start of the season after that.

**Third Star of the Week: 11/10/08 – 11/16/08, lost his next two starts.

Pekka Rinne

Rookie of the Month: February 2009, went 7-2-3 in March 2009 including one shutout and winning his next two consecutive starts.

Third Star of the Month: January 2011, went 4-1-2 in his next seven games, including one shutout.

Third Star of the Month: March 2011, went 2-1-1 to finish the season in April 2011, then helped the Predators to their first ever playoff series win against Anaheim.

Third Star of the Month: January 2012, won his next start and went 6-2-3 in February 2012.

First Star of the Week: 12/1/08 – 12/7/08, went 1-1 in his next two immediate starts, with his win being a 23 save shutout.

Second Star of the Week: 10/26/09 – 11/1/09, won seven of his next eight, including a 20 save shutout against Montreal.

Third Star of the Week: 3/8/10 – 3/14/10, won his next four straight, including two shutouts.

First Star of the Week: 3/15/10 – 3/21/10, went 4-3-1 with a shutout to finish the season.

Second Star of the Week: 12/12/11 – 12/18/11, went 4-1 in his next five games.

Second Star of the Week: 1/23/12 – 1/29/12, went 2-0-1 in his next three starts.

While both Chris Mason and Dan Ellis both experienced a bit of a let down in at least one of their weekly awards, Vokoun and Rinne never did, either winning their next immediate start or having a longer stretch of wins past that. Nashville’s only other recipient of the Rookie of the Month nod, Pekka Rinne, went 9-2-1 in the month of February with two shutouts and followed it up with a 7-2-3 record with one shutout in March.

The stats bode well for award winners that play for Nashville. However with the Predators being a bit dinged up on defense, and Rinne possibly returning soon, it’ll be interesting to see how Mazanec fares over his next handful of starts. Based on his most recent play, it should be more of the same.
