Keep an eye on...

Nashville Predators -

David Legwand – Recording 11 points in his past ten games, Legwand has been a force for the Predators as he leads the team with 18 points and is tied for 44th in the entire NHL for points scored. While there’s no denying that it is a contract year for Legwand, his offensive production has helped Nashville recover from their weak start.

New York Rangers -

Rick Nash – Only two games removed after missing nearly a month of the season due to a concussion, Nash found the back of the net for the first time this season two nights ago against the Dallas Stars. With a healthy Rick Nash, the Rangers have a key piece of their offense back in their lineup, especially if he starts to produce goals for the NHL’s 28th ranked team in goals per game.

Main Storylines

Nashville Predators -

Tonight, Nashville has a chance to do something that they haven’t done since the 2006-2007 season: beat at least five of the Original Six teams. After starting their seven game road trip with a 2-0-1 record, the Predators finished it going 0-4 before reversing the trend with back-to-back-to-back wins against Chicago, Detroit, and Toronto, their longest win streak of the season to date.

The Predators now have six players who have eclipsed double-digits in points this season: David Legwand, Craig Smith, Patric Hornqvist, Shea Weber, Colin Wilson, and Matt Cullen, who registered a four-point night on Thursday against the Maple Leafs. The aforementioned Craig Smith has six points (3g, 3a) during Nashville’s win streak.

Goaltender Marek Mazanec, who started off his NHL career with losses to both the New York Islanders and the Pittsburgh Penguins, has been in net for all three of Nashville’s wins during their streak, recording his first shutout of his career against the Red Wings this past Tuesday.

New York Rangers -

With the Rangers coming off a 3-2 victory against the Dallas Stars on Thursday evening, they look to put a stop to the Predators’ current three game winning streak. Prior to beating the Stars, New York lost three of their previous four games, all four coming by a one-goal margin. Like most of the Eastern Conference teams, the Rangers are no exception to having trouble facing teams from the West, as they currently have a 2-6-0 record against Western Conference foes.

The likely candidates lead the way offensively for the Rangers with Brad Richards and Derek Stepan scoring 16 and 15 points respectively through the teams first 22 games. Derek Brassard and John Moore are both on two game point streaks, both scoring one goal and one assist.

Henrik Lundqvist has been the goaltender of record in nine of the Rangers past 11 games, going 5-4-0 in that span. Rangers goaltender, and University of Alabama-Huntsville alumni, Cam Talbot, started the other two games going 2-0-0 and recording a shutout as well.

Last time out...

Three goals, one in each period. That’s all it took to dispatch the Predators in New York City on January 17th, 2012. Dan Girardi, John Mitchell, and Ryan Callahan all scored a goal, with Henrik Lundqvist recording his first shutout of the season, to beat the Predators 3-0.

One interesting fact...

In sixteen career games against each other, the series is ties 7-7-2 with the Predators only going 2-4-1 at home against the Rangers. Prior to New York’s 3-0 victory against Nashville on January 17th, 2012, road teams had won six straight in the series. Nashville’s last home victory against the Rangers came on a 2-1 overtime victory on February 28th, 2004.
