Disputes Continue and a Milwaukee Admirals Update

Last week provided the Wabash Cannonball experience for Nashvillians, especially Predator fans. The NHL and Gary Bettman put forth a “good faith” effort to come to terms with the NHLPA by offering a proposal that would see the revenue sharing split 50-50. By using a sliding scale for the salaries already in place, the league would be able to offer the players what they want while sliding the increments down over the first three years which would be more than covered if the league continues to grow at the rate it has been for the last three years.

The NHLPA rejected this new CBA offering from the NHL and proposed three more agreements of their own with increasing demands to favor the players. The NHL rejected all these and both parties find themselves at a standstill. Gary Bettman was quoted as saying “[he] believes the negotiation have taken a step back” and this week of silence while more NHL players slip away to overseas ice is deafening to the fans of the NHL and their respected teams.

In the end, even Barack Obama stated his frustration with the standoff and hoped that both sides could come to an agreement with a quickness to resolve the issue for the fan’s sake. Games have already been cancelled up to November 2nd and many sources are saying that the Winter Classic could be in jeopardy of shutting down for this year. Personally, I thought of the Winter Classic as a hard date for the NHL to start playing and if the Winter Classic was lost then the season would inevitably be next. Here’s hoping that the two sides can put last week behind them and start negotiating within reason so that this season isn’t lost like the 2004-2005 and hockey gains limelight attention as being one of the worst run professional sports organizations in history.

In other news, the Milwaukee Admirals are now 1-3 since last Friday with their sole win coming in overtime at Houston, the final game in three consecutive nights by a score of 5-4. With their losses against Charlotte, San Antonio and Texas, the Admirals stand at 2-3 on the year. Mattias Ekholm is adjusting to North American ice well as he leads the team along with Taylor Beck with 5 points. Patrick Cehlin, who is also playing his first season in the AHL is leading the team with 3 goals.

Jeremy Smith has decent numbers with a GAA of 2.28 and a SV% of .901 but unfortunately has a 1-3 record to show for it. Michael Latta is leading a disturbing trend to the penalty box with 24 PIM on the year…18 more than the closest player on the Admirals (Scott Valentine and Patrick Cehlin with 6).

The Admirals play the Houston Aeros in Houston on Saturday, puck drops at 7:05 P.M. CST and finish out the month of October with a Halloween game at Milwaukee against the Charlotte Checkers at 7:00 P.M. Will the Admirals get tricked by Charlotte or will they provide the Nashville and Milwaukee faithful with a treat?
