In about 10 weeks, Columbus will play host to the first-of-its’-kind divisional tweet-up. Arguably, the Central Division has been the toughest division in the National Hockey League. A few months ago, an idea was born to bring together the great fans from these five teams in one central location. Myself (Kristopher Martel, owner/chief-editor of The Predatorial) and Rick Gethin (@rickgethin, former Associate Editor of The Hockey Writers and one of the two guys running Full Mental Jackets) collaborated to make this into what could be a perfect storm. Thus, the 2012 Central Division Tweet Up came into being.
Only fitting to have a motto of “A Gathering Of Tribes”, Columbus will be rocking in the final weekend of July, celebrating all that is great about the sport of hockey and the Central Division teams that we love.
Along with a large influx of fans, there will be charitable raffles throughout the day, providing fans with a chance to go home with some great autographed memorabilia from their favorite team.
The NHL Alumni Association will be donating some items and 102.5 The Game’s SlapShot Radio will be coming along for the festivities to do a broadcast from the tweetup. Nick Johnson, the Columbus Blue Jackets in-arena DJ, will be providing music for the event itself. Special videos from each teams foundation and the alumni association will be shown throughout the day!
100% of the proceeds from the raffles will go back to the five Central Division teams Foundations and to the NHL Alumni Association charity.
This is the CURRENT Tentative Schedule of events for the CDTU on Saturday, July 28th, 2012:
12pm – 4:30pm: Central Division Tweetup/Fan Fest, Buffalo Wild Wings – Grandview
6pm – ???: The RBar (Nationwide Arena District) – More raffles and casual festivities throughout the evening
We all know that going through summer is one of the most difficult times for a hockey fan, just for the sole fact that NOTHING is going on (for the most part). If you’re looking for something to do at the end of July and want to get together with hockey fans from throughout the Central Division, make your way up to Columbus on July 28th. Trust me, you won’t want to miss this, it’s going to be the hockey highlight of the summer!
Plus, are you thinking it could be too long of a drive? Think again. Any of the Central Division cities are but a quarter-day trip away from Columbus:
Nashville is 381 miles away (@70mph – 5 hours and 26 minutes). That’s less time than it takes to get to Bristol for a NASCAR race
Chicago is 356 miles away, Detroit 204, and St. Louis has the longest trip with 417 miles.
If there is enough interest, there is a possibility of renting a bus and getting a special hotel rate. If this is something you’d be interested in getting more information about, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Other than that, hope to see you in Columbus! We’ll post updates from time to time with added events/guests as they are scheduled
