Odds and Ends: Chapter II

-----

So, nearly 5 months ago I did my first chapter of “Odds and Ends”, why not bring out chapter 2 after the first month of the season? Let’s get RIGHT into it!

  • Nashville broke a 4 game losing streak Saturday against a team that they had previously lost 4 straight to. Wow…what are the chances there?

———————

  • The Washington Capitals have now won 7 straight after smacking around the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night, 7-1. That is their longest streak to start a season in franchise history

———————

  • Ryan Porth over at @Smashville247 broke news earlier today that Fisher and Bouillon could BOTH be back as early as tomorrow night’s Predators/Sharks game. As much as that would be a great boost to the lineup, I wouldn’t expect either to significantly factor into the lineup until they get a game or 2 of minutes under their belts

———————

———————

  • Nikolai Khabibulin now has an absolutely absurd GAA of 0.72 in 4 games (2-0-2) and only allowing 3 goals on 97 shots. Absurd, absolutely absurd. I HIGHLY highly doubt that sticks after the season is all said and done, but could you imagine a record like this after a full 82 games? It would never be broken, ever. Almost a Gretzky-like record

———————

  • The Columbus Blue Jackets found a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on Saturday night, allowing two goals in 31 seconds during the final minute of play when they visited Ottawa. A franchise-worst start of 0-7-1 and Detroit/Buffalo/Chicago/Anaheim coming up? If they don’t beat Detroit tomorrow night at home then heads are going to start rolling in Blue Jacket land.

———————

  • Some of the more “elite” NHL stars are finding their way up to the top of the lead in minor penalties accumulated after the first tenth of the season: Zdeno Chara is tied for 3rd while Corey Perry and Shea Weber are tied for 6th. Jeremy broke that down a little more here

———————

  • Another interesting stat is the #2 player in the ENTIRE NHL for average Time On Ice: Guess who! Ryan Suter is behind only Dan Girardi of the NY Rangers and has an average of 27:51, almost half the game.

———————

  • Surprise surprise! Guess who leads the team in Shooting Percentage? Sergei Kostitsyn leads Nashville with a 25% percentage

———————

  • Think Pekka Rinne is getting peppered with shots? You’d think right. Rinne is tied with Semyon Varlamov (Colorado) at 211 shots faced and both are only behind Steve Mason (Columbus) for the league lead in shots faced. I’m don’t think that is really a positive record.

———————

  • Nashville is one of FIVE teams who currently do not have a regular season home victory on their plate (Columbus, Colorado, Montreal, New York Rangers). However, to be fair to the New York Rangers, they have YET to play a game in their arena (their first home game is Thursday against the Leafs)

———————

  • Dallas, Detroit, and Washington are the only teams undefeated at home currently. Conversely, Colorado is the ONLY team with a perfect road record (6-0-0), except 3 of those wins are in the shootout, which will be nullified for tie-breaker purposes in the playoff race

———————

  • Last note: Craig Smith is 4th overall in rookie point scoring with 5 points, tied with Landeskog (COL), and behind Read (PHI), Adam (BUF), and Nugent-Hopkins (EDM) who leads all rookies with 7 points.
