Shea Weber Awarded 1yr, $7.5mil Deal Via Arbitration

Arbitration has come and gone, but the results are in: Shea Weber has been awarded a 1 year, $7.5 million dollar deal. Whatever was said during the arbitration process between Weber&Co and GM David Poile and the Predators has yet (and may not ever) be revealed, but the truth of the matter is this: arbitration doesn’t do any help to any situation. Granted, arbitration can give both sides a starting point for an amount that a player deserves to make, but the arguments that both sides use to get to that value is where feelings are usually hurt.

The $7.5 million that Weber will make this season is completely reasonable. Weber is one of the top 3 defenseman in the league, there is no arguing this. He is a Norris Trophy finalist, an All-Star/Olympic-caliber player, and will undoubtedly be in the Hall of Fame one day. However, what Predators fans now have to worry about is the aftermath. Did Weber do the right thing by switching agents mid off-season? Would Meehan (former agent) have been able to get a deal done BEFORE the arbitration, or would it have still made it this far? Most in the Predators organization were “astonished” it reached arbitration.

Look at it this way: for the time being, Weber is still the captain of the Nashville Predators. The Predators still own the rights to one of the deadliest shots in the league and one of the most feared defenseman. It’s all a matter of how David Poile juggles the contracts that need to be renewed next off-season (13 on the active roster).

So, what should you be thinking right now if you’re a Predators fan? Try this:

“Oh boy, I hope we get past the second round this year.”

“Whew…I hope Poile can show Weber the Predators mean business”

or my favorite

“Gosh, I can’t wait till the season starts! I’m so excited to have Weber back!”

Use that last one.
